Australia's Booming Animation and VFX Industry

Jun 24, 2019

Australia's Animation and VFX industry is booming. Australian studios are helping build out-of-this-world effects and environments for studios like Marvel and DC, streaming giants Netflix, Stan, Amazon, and Disney are commissioning more original animated work than ever before, and small video game publishers are punching above their weight with titles like Florence and Hollow Knight winning acclaim around the world.

Hot on the heels of Spider-Man: Enter The Spiderverse recently winning an Academy Award, Sony has announced new International and Alternative Animation Divisions in an attempt to keep up with the steadily increasing appetite for original animated content.

Studios like Rising Sun Pictures, based in Adelaide, and Luma Pictures, based in Melbourne with an additional office in Los Angeles, are frequently tasked with bringing the vibrant fantasy worlds of blockbuster hits like like Captain Marvel, X-Men, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter to life, and are always on the lookout for newly graduated students to bring onboard.

Opportunities are steadily increasing in gaming as well. Team Cherry, a small team based in Australia, are taking advantage of improvements in publishing tools for independent studios. Led by animation industry veteran Ari Gibson, Team Cherry's 2D platforming title Hollow Knight has frequently been in the top 10 most popular games on the Nintendo Switch, and has sold over 2.8 million copies worldwide since it was released digitally in 2017.
