The creative industries have been forged and revolutionised by iconic women over the years: Aretha Franklin in music, Agnès Varda in film, Emily Lazar in audio, Rei Kawakubo in fashion, and more. Unfortunately, many successful women fell through the cracks in history as society erased their influence, but International Women's Day is looking to change that by celebrating the incredible contributions that women make everyday.
So we asked our students at Wellington St campus about the women and non-binary role models who inspire them on a daily basis—whether it's your loving mum or an iconic celebrity—and what they said reaffirmed that women's legacy continue to motivate and encourage all of us to this day.
ALEX — AUDIO ENGINEERING
"My mum because she lives with a fair amount of chronic pain and illness, and she doesn't let that slow her down or stop her in what she wants to achieve."
EPHRAIM — AUDIO ENGINEERING
"A woman in the industry who inspires me is LOUISAHHH!!! [Louisa Pillottt]. She's a French techno DJ and she's been sober for a number of years while focused on positivity."
MADDIE — MUSIC PERFORMANCE
"A woman that inspires me is Aretha Franklin because she's super groovy and for the time she was famous, she kicked arse."
JOSH — MUSIC PERFORMANCE
"A woman that inspires me is my mum. She's the strongest person I know, been through a lot in the last few years, and always puts us first."
RAE — MUSIC PRODUCTION
"A person who inspires me is Lady Gaga because she's really influential both as a musician and a person, and she genuinely cares about people and what she does."
PEANY — MUSIC PERFORMANCE
"A woman that inspires me is my great-grandmother. She was always the strongest person in the family and did everything she could for everyone around her, and loved everybody she met as equally as anyone that's close to her."
JUSTIN — MUSIC PRODUCTION
"A woman that inspires me is DJ Tigerlily because she's trying to make her way through the DJ industry, trying to get herself out there, and become a role model for other female DJs."
JULIA — MUSIC PERFORMANCE
"The woman that inspires me the most is my friend Renee because she's very hard-working and inspires me to become a better person and a better musician."
BIANCA — ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT
"So the woman who inspires me is Jess Carroll, and that's because I've had her for two classes, and she always comes in so positive and really encourages me to want to work in the industry, and that's really amazing."
NOAH — MUSIC PERFORMANCE
"The woman that inspires me the most is probably Ella Fitzgerald, as I just love the way she scats in jazz and she's created more opportunity for women in jazz as well."
