Meet The New Collarts Dean, Professor Tim Moss

Sep 16, 2020

The mantle of Collarts Dean is being passed on—meet your new Dean, Professor Tim Moss. Previously the Associate Dean of eLearning & Innovation, Tim has been vital to ensuring our transition into remote education goes as smooth as possible. We hit him up to see if we could find out more about the man behind the job and where he sees Collarts travelling in the future.

Can you tell us a little bit about your career so far?

Education has been the key focus for me across my whole career. Initially I trained as a Drama teacher, and I’ve worked in higher education for about 20 years, across both public unis and private providers. Whatever the role has been, my focus has always been about ensuring we are providing educational experiences that are student-focused, high-quality, and relevant for students’ aspirations and their study goals.

You're a big advocate for online learning. What possibilities of remote education are you passionate about the most?

For me, the most exciting thing about online education is that it provides opportunities and access for all students. Online education is a great equaliser—you no longer need to live close to your uni or college to be able to take a course there, and you don’t need to be available 9-5 on weekdays to attend classes. Good quality online education (like we provide at Collarts) is flexible, personalised, and available when you need it, without compromising on the quality, networks, or learning outcomes that you can gain from study.

What do you love about Collarts?

From the first day I arrived at Collarts, I was blown away by the amazing community feel. Everyone is passionate about their field, our students, and the opportunity we have to work together to give these students the best possible start in their creative careers. This great passion and energy is part of everything we do, and it plays out in all kinds of different ways—from providing students with amazing opportunities and industry partnerships, to the ways our teachers put their hearts, experiences, and insights into supporting every student in every class. It’s such a positive, creative community and that means we can achieve some truly incredible things together.

community and that means we can achieve
some truly incredible things together."

What do you envision for the future of Collarts?

Collarts will continue to thrive as long as we keep our focus where it needs to be—our passion for bringing students an educational experience that is industry-focused, student-centred, and digitally enabled. We’ll continue to innovate in the experiences that we create for students, the courses we offer, and the online and on-campus facilities we provide to support learning. And at the end of the day, our mission throughout all of this stays the same: it’s about providing the highest quality education in the creative industries.

I’m very excited and humbled to be taking on the role of Dean at Collarts. It’s a challenging time in higher education and arts sector right now, but I feel as though we are all working as hard as we possibly can to support our creative community. We’re all learning new skills, navigating new platforms and means of communication, and finding resilience and optimism in our work together. I’m honoured to be part of this amazing community and to be given this opportunity to help chart our path into the future.
