Led by our expert, award-winning staff and teachers, The Collarts Summer Workshop Series are specially tailored for VCE and VET students aged 15-20 of all skill levels. Combining theoretical practices with hands-on activities and collaboration, our workshops are perfect for students wanting to boost their creative skills and learn from some of the industry's best.

Sketch Comedy Writing & Performance

Course Focus: Comedy

About: In the Sketch Comedy Writing & Performance Workshop, you will learn about the different genres and styles of short form sketch comedy such as Parody, Juxtaposition, Word Play, Metaphor, Slapstick and Absurdism. This practical workshop will discuss different types of TV sketch shows, what works and why. You will also be taught different techniques and have the opportunity to write, perform and gain feedback on your sketches.

What to Expect: After examining shows like Saturday Night Live, Mad As Hell, Black Comedy, You're Skitting Me and more, you will be shown different techniques and styles for writing sketches including following a template called "The Rule of Five". Working in small groups, you will practice writing several types of sketch with differing themes, topics and characters. Each group will be invited to “table read” their sketches to the class who will assist with constructive feedback.

Once your group have chosen their best sketch, you will spend some time fine-tuning, paying attention to character, gags and finding that great punchline or “out”. Collarts teachers will provide you guidance throughout. In the afternoon, you will cast and rehearse the sketch, and perform in front of the entire class. Afterwards, there will be an open discussion on how you can develop your comedy further. Collarts staff will give a brief overview of our Bachelor of Comedy course and the types of careers available in the entertainment and comedy industries.

Learning Outcomes: You will develop an understanding of sketch genres, writing techniques, editing, sketch characterisation and performance through collaboration.

Instrumental Workshop

Course Focus: Music Performance

About: In the Instrumental Workshop, you will be able to connect, learn from and perform with Collarts' ARIA award-winning staff and alumni. This practical workshop day will give you access to multiple activities, all focused on instrumental performance, practice routines, touring, technical skills and more. 

What to Expect: The workshop will contain multiple activities for you to participate in and hone your skills with your instrument. This includes:

→ Exclusive Masterclass with Twelve Foot Ninja Drummer, Shane ‘Russ’ Russel
In this activity, you will have the opportunity to learn and discuss life as an artist with Shane Russel, including gaining insight on the p
erformance, touring, practice routines, band dynamics, and importance of a healthy lifestyle. With an additional drum and equipment run down, you will be able to learn about how to handle your instruments.

→ Interactive Performance
In this activity, you will be invited to watch our staff and alumni perform. With the opportunity to join in and collaborate with other attendees, this open live performance will allow you to grow your improv skills and assist in your confidence building in a casual, welcoming environment.

→ Recording Studios
In this activity, Collarts invites you to see our world-class recording studios in action with students, alumni and staff. Discussing the technical setups across our campuses, this activity also offers you the chance to participate in recording techniques and get involved in the recording side of instrumentals. 

→ Practice and Styles
In this activity, there will be a demonstration and discussion of technical and practical performance techniques. You will be able to talk and collaborate with Collarts' expert staff about developing your skills for better performance.

→ Career and Course Advice
In this activity, you will have the opportunity to meet our staff and alumni to discuss your future. They will help you plan your musical development, and discuss a viable pathway into your desired career. 

Collarts staff will give a brief overview of our Bachelor of Music Performance course and the types of careers available in the entertainment and comedy industries.

Learning Outcomes: You will develop a deeper understanding of the music industry's need for instrumentalists and learn about the changing creative facets of the music industry. You will sharpen your skills in performance and collaboration, and gain clarity on career pathways in music.

LOGIC PRO X WORKSHOPS

Course Focus: Music Production 
Time & Date: Thursday 16th January 2020 — Session 1: 10am-12pm — Session 2: 1pm-3pm

About: In the Logic Pro X Workshop, you will be taken through the basics of how Logic works, led by ARIA-award winner and teacher, Tim Watson. This practical workshop is for beginner to intermediate skill levels, and will explore different software and ways of mixing. 

What to Expect: Logic Pro X is Apple's flagship production suite, and is a fantastic launch pad for music production. It comes fully equipped with software synths, drum machines, plugin effects, and a host of royalty free loops. Teaching you how to use Logic Pro X, this workshop will focus on how you can create finished professional recordings. 

On the day, Tim Watson will take you through all the basics of how Logic works—including sampling and synthesis—and even get you to create your own tracks within the workshop. You will explore how to use software drummers or drum loops, how to add percussion and bass parts, how to use arpeggiators and other keyboards, and finally mix down your tracks to a final mp3 to keep. Collarts staff will give a brief overview of our Bachelor of Music Production course and the types of careers available in the entertainment and comedy industries.

Learning Outcomes: You will learn how to use Logic Pro X and the tools you need to develop a finished professional recording. While learning skills in sampling and synthesis, you will create a final mp3 to keep.
